Frankonia Eurobau unveils designs for new development on Schinkelplatz in Berlin

Frankonia Eurobau, a leading property developer specializing in the premium segment, today unveiled the designs for its new development on Schinkelplatz in Berlin. By 2016, 4,800 square meters of residential and 3,700 square meters of commercial space will be created between the Bauakademie (School of Architecture) and Friedrichswerder Church. Frankonia’s partner for the project is LVM Landwirtschaftlicher Versicherungsverein Münster A.G. (LVM Agricultural Insurance Association Münster A.G.). “We have fought for ten years for this unique property,” explains Uwe Schmitz, CEO of Frankonia Eurobau AG. “This location is very special and requires a sustainable and ambitious type of building.” Frankonia Eurobau and the city of Berlin initiated an architectural competition entitled “From Prussia to Europe”, to which 14 renowned firms of architects were invited. “The new project should internalise the art of Friedrich Schinkel, the architect who gave his name to the square and who designed many land mark buildings in Berlin. His architecture stands for the Prussian virtues of practicality and disciplined objectivity, but also for the modern transformation of the city into a European metropolis,” says Regula Lüscher, Berlin’s senator in charge of building works.

Three winning design concepts unsure an array of architectural highlights

Schultes Frank Architects from Berlin were the winners for the residential and commercial buildings on Schinkelplatz. Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes’ designs for the buildings on the west side of the square are a modern interpretation of the giant order. This is a reference to Friedrich

The winning designs for the Boarding House and the residential buildings on Niederlagstraße are also from a Berlin based firm, Hemprich Tophof. The design for the plot on the corner with flat front elevations, deep-set loggias and a pronounced three-dimensional façade, with wide views to the west reaching to Gendarmenmarkt, form a calming contrast to Friedrichswerder Church.

Rafael Moneo Arquitecto from Madrid submitted the winning design for the office and residential building on Werderscher Markt. The Spanish firm of architects proposed a restrained and independent link between the Bauakademie (School of Architecture) and Friedrichswerder Church, which is characterized by a distinctive base and emerging upper floors.
