Grosser Burstah
The Hamburg Nikolai District: the heart of the Hanseatic city
Between the Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square), Rödingsmarkt and Willy-Brandt-Straße lies what is probably the most time-honoured trading location in Hamburg. The Nikolai quarter is considered to be the secret heart of the Hanseatic city. And thanks to the “Nikolai Quartier” Business Improvement District (BID) and initiatives by private investors, real estate developers and owners, the centre of the city will once again be restored to its former glory. A total of €9.32 million has been raised to upgrade the entire district making the Nikolai Quartier BID the most extensive project of its kind in Germany. The work will continue until 2019. Using light coloured paving, the new paths and open spaces should blend in harmoniously with the existing overall visual look of the district. In addition, new green spaces and modern benches are to be built.
FRANKONIA Eurobau has built its own project “Grosser Burstah” on Grosser Burstah street in the centre of the Nikolai district. The development includes apartments, office and retail space. The Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper is the anchor tenant and has rented 12,000 square meters of office space. The retail space is let, among others, to Habitat and dm drugstore. For many centuries Grosser Burstah was the main shopping street in Hamburg. Thanks to the Nikolai District BID and projects such as FRANKONIA Eurobau’s Grosser Burstah development the street can now build on its own history.
